LOCAL OUTDOOR CLIMBING

During summer months, the club holds weekly climbing evenings at a local quarry within the Ham Hill Country Park.

Ham Hill itself is approximately six miles west of Yeovil, overlooking the village of Stoke sub-Hamdon. Local climbers have used the quarries for at least twenty-five years and there are a variety of established routes for all climbing levels. The club practices multiple climbing disciplines, including bouldering, top-roping, sport climbing and traditional climbing.

For day-trips, not far to the south we have the nationally recognised bolt-protected climbing on Portland and miles of more adventurous climbing on the Swanage cliffs. To the North, we have the Wye Valley, Avon Gorge, Cheddar and Fairy Cave Quarry.

The club runs monthly climbing meets and provides opportunities for longer trips in the UK and abroad.

The monthly meet will be either a day trip to a local climbing area or a weekend away, perhaps to the Welsh mountains or a more distant rock climbing venue. Accommodation for weekend trips may be camping or a climbing club hut.

Traditionally meets have always gone out irrespective of weather. If climbing is impossible then a challenging and wet navigation exercise on Dartmoor may be the alternative, or the coast path, or Bristly Ridge on Glyder Fach if we’re in Wales. There’s usually something that can be done.

Abroad there is generally an opportunity to climb in the Alps during the summer, or perhaps the Pyrenees or the Dolomites, all of which have had a visit from us in recent years. Further afield, the club has most recently climbed in Kalymnos, Greece; Tafraout, Morocco; and Wadi Rum, Jordan.

Between the framework of ‘official’ meets members make their own arrangements and it is usually possible to find a weekend climbing companion from amongst the members. While the club doesn't offer official training, we actively encourage 'peer-led' learning and knowledge sharing, passing on what knowledge we have to introduce people to traditional and sport climbing.
